Workplace deaths down in West Virginia

Work place-related deaths are down in West Virginia for the first time since 2002.

According to preliminary figures, 41 people were killed in work-related accidents in 2009. This number is the lowest since 2002, which had 40 work-related deaths.

The number one cause for deaths was highway accidents followed by being hit by falling objects or equipment. In West Virginia, the transportation and warehousing industry had the highest number of workplace deaths accounting for 27 percent.
