New regulations put in place to protect athletes from brain injury

Posted on September 14th, 2010 No Comments

The Secondary School Activities Commission has put new regulations into place to make it clear whether a student athlete who suffers a concussion should be able to play again.

This new regulation will require that a student that suffers a head injury must be looked at by a doctor or healthcare professional immediately. This never used to be the case, head injuries were treated like any injury and students were usually allowed back on the playing field after suffering from a concussion.

These new guidelines say that any student that shows symptoms of a concussion such as headaches, dizziness, balance problems or confusion must be taken out of the game. If no doctor is available to examine the student, they are not allowed to go back into the competition.
